BLOODFIRE is a six-minute short film from the Pasifika-First Nations musical collective FAMILI, an allegory of resistance and liberation woven from Oceania’s past, present and future.
Co-directed by Sione Teumohenga (aka Lonelyspeck) and Bella Waru — who appear in the film alongside their FAMILI collaborators Ripley Kavara (Lakatoi), Kalala Sione, Porobibi, and Dani Sib – BLOODFIRE is a companion piece to the collective’s upcoming debut EP of the same name. Born from our current moment as people of Oceania, BLOODFIRE is the slippage between us, our ancestors and our descendants, the urban and the ancient.
BLOODFIRE is an act of reclamation, reverence and connection, taking back what is rightfully ours and honouring what is most precious, beautiful and unwavering in our communities, our cultures, our stories and each other.
FAMILI is woven from Oceania’s past, present and future. What began as a calling to connect artists at the intersections of Pasifika, Blak, queer and trans experiences has bloomed into a years-long intercultural musical collaboration. The shapeshifting collective draws from the ancient and new, honouring the sounds of the past through recontextualising traditional instruments into genres of rap, R&B and electronic, culminating in anthems of resistance that propel their sonic lineages into the future.
